Richard L. Whan, 65, of Viola died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at his home.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Monday at Reynolds United Methodist Church. Burial is in Preemption Cemetery.

Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Serenity Hospice of Mercer County, or the church. Family Funeral Services, Aledo, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 2, 1936, the son of William L. and Laverne Johnston Whan. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1954. He married Carol Ann Hofer Dec. 23, 1955, in Rock Island.

He was employed at Alcoa in Davenport as a machinist for 33 years, retiring in June 1994.

He was a trustee of the church and was on the Preemption Cemetery Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann Whan; daughters, Debbie Marlyere and Dana Whan, both of Emerson, Ga., and Kathy Whan and close friend Curt Wadsworth, Aledo; sons and spouses, Steve and June Whan, Rock Island, Perry and Sherri Whan, Viola, Chris and Melissa Whan, North Liberty, Iowa, Eric and Veronica Whan, Viola, and Roy and Justine Whan, Anchorage, Alaska; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a brother-in-law, Sam Hutchinson, rural Milan.
