DEATHS

JOHNSTON - John W Johnston was born in Bowling, Oct 18, 1860, and died on June 25, 1917, aged 56 years, 8 months, 7 days. He was a son of Robert R and Mary J Johnston and lived all his life in this locality. In 1885 he was married to Miss Mary E Blakley who survives to mourn. There also survive two sisters - Mrs J J George of Derby and Mrs Thomas Hicks of Montezuma, Iowa, both of whom were here for the funeral - and one brother, Robert J, of Bowling. Five brothers and sisters had preceded him in death. He was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal church, but in 1884 united with the M E church of Preemption. It is rarely said of any one that he died without an enemy but such can truly be said of Johnnie Johnston. A kind unassuming man, he lived among his neighbors, ever doing the little, unselfish and thoughtful things that make a community life better for one's having lived in it. A patient sufferer for years, he was always cheerful and uncomplaining and when his summons came to "join that innumerable throng where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, he approached the end of his life without fear, and soothed and sustained by an unfaltering trust, as one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams." Not a demonstrative man, but a man of deep convictions quietly lived up to, the last few weeks of his life found him ready for the final summons. He was not afraid for his trust in God sustained him. His last words spoken to his pastor were, "I am trusting in Jesus and I know he will care for me and mine." Funeral services were held at 2 pm on June 27 at the preemption M E church. Dr Small officiated and Rev McOmber of Reynolds assisted. Burial was made at Preemption.
