Dear Brother and Sister, I now take up my pen in hand to write a few lines to you to let you know that we are all well and doing well. Dear Sis, I received your letter and we are all sorry to hear if Brother John (John Johnston (I4615)) goes back to Australia again. I think he could do better in this country. I would like to see them all. If they don't meet on earth, I hope we all meet in heaven, where parting is no more. If he will send me here Picture (?) I will send them Joseph (Joseph C Johnston (I5257)) and mine in the next letter. I want to have my mother (Elizabeth Mayne (I4614)) and Bessy's (Elizabeth Bessy Johnston (I4623)) too and get them all taking in Clones, and sister Eliza (Eliza Jane Johnston (I4617)) had a letter from brother John (John Johnston (I4615)) not very long ago. She is sorry that he is going back to Australia. Dear Sister, the friends in this country is all well. Thomas of "Kilecky" and his wife is well and little Fred is living with them. They have a nice place but she is a hard old case. Thomas looks good and fit. I seen him about two weeks ago. Dear Sister, I am going to tell what I have raised of little chickens. I have got about two hundred and fifty out and I have as many more set. I hope to raise five hundred. As for ducks I have none yet. I have ten hens on duck eggs. I will let you know when they come and how many I have. Dear Sister I have to work pretty hard they keep hard (?) hand. Joseph (Joseph C Johnston (I5257)) and I (Margaret Olivia Maggie Johnston (I4620)) do all the milking. We only milk 8?. 18?, 28? cows we let to such (?). I thought that was enough to attend myself when I wash, churn .... I ... bakes ten loaves bread every day four times a week and I cooks .... and ... another day. The gisher (?) gets the children ready for school they go every day. Dear Sister we bought a place up in Montezuma and two houses on it. It is in the best end in town. James Johnston's son Frank is near and he is a big strong fellow and he sells beer in "town" Dear Sister I want you to write me a long letter and put lots of news in it. Tell sister Matilda (Matilda Johnston (I4624)) to write me a letter and I will send her a long ..... I have not much more to say but I want to let you know the rates of market. Wheat is 20 cents per bushel. Cats 15 cents pork 2 dollars and forty cents potatoes 40 cents per .... Butter 10 cents per ferks.Eggs 7 cents per dozen. DEATHS JOHNSTON - Joseph C Johnston died on June 7 at a hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, where he had been taking treatment for two weeks. Mr Johnston was born in Ireland about 72 years ago and lived for many years in Bowling where he had many relatives. The funeral was held on Sunday at his home in Deep River, Iowa. Among those from this vicinity who attended the funeral were Mr and Mrs Thomas Doonan, Miss Mary Johnston and Henry Hutchinson.
