OBITUARY JOHNSTON

Funeral services were held on Thursday morning last week in St John's Episcopal church, Preemption, for Mrs Elizabeth Johnston, age 84, whose death occurred at her home in Bowling on April 3. The rector, the Rev John S Neal, officiated and interment was in Preemption cemetery. Pallbearers were Lee Roy Johnston, A W Johnson, Perry Mayne and Mrs Johnston's three sons, John H, Thomas R and Edward N Johnston. Elizabeth Peasley was born on July 5, 1850, at Tully, County Fermanagh, Ireland. She came to America in 1871 and settled in Rock Island county. In March, 1877, she was married to Thomas H Johnston who preceded her in death on Dec 21, 1921. To this union were born five children, all of whom survive. They are John H of Rock Island, Thomas R of Kankakee, Mrs Addie Sederquist of Reynolds and Edward N and William F at home. After their marriage Mr and Mrs Johnston settled on a farm in Bowling and it was on this farm that Mr and Mrs Johnston reared their children, lived and died. Mrs Johnston was baptized in infancy a member of the Church of England, in this country the Protestant Episcopal church, was confirmed in her youth and remained a devoted and faithful communicant during her entire life. Mrs Johnston's life was closely wrapt up in that of her church, and it was very seldom indeed that a Sunday past without her having been present at the services of her church, whenever such services were held and it was humanly possible for her to attend. She was likewise devoted to her family and her home. It was in her home in loving service to her family that she found her greatest joy and greatest usefulness. Besides her five children she leaves to mourn her passing ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of relatives, neighbors and friends.
