OLD RESIDENT BURIED FEB 2 IN PREEMPTION

Funeral services for Mrs Matilda Johnston, 77, who died Thursday morning at her home in Preemption, were held Saturday afternoon at the home with Rev T M Baxter officiating. Burial was in the Preemption Cemetery. Death was due to pneumonia which followed influenza.

Mrs Johnston was a life-long resident of Preemption. She was born in that township, Oct 22, 1851, the daughter of John and Jane Johnston, pioneer residents of the community. Her education was received in the old Preemption school, the first built in that section of the county.

MARRIED IN 1871

She was united in marriage with James Johnston at Preemption, July 3, 1871. He preceded her in death Jan 19, 1928. Surviving are two sons, Harry and Ralph of Preemption; a daughter, Mrs James Moffitt, of Preemption and a sister, Miss Emma Johnston of Reynolds. Ten grandchildren and one great grandchild also are living.

Mrs Johnston was a member of St John's Episcopal church of Preemption and was a member of Preemption Chapter No 385, Order of Eastern Star.

JOHNSTON - Funeral services of Mrs Matilda Johnston were held at the family residence at 1:30 last Saturday afternoon. the Rev T M Baxter of St John's church delivered the sermon and members of the church choir sang appropriate hymns. Officers and members of Idlewild Chapter, O E S, were present and they conducted in an impressive manner the ritualistic ceremonies of the order. Interment was made in the family lot in Preemption cemetery.

A daughter of John and Jane Johnston, early settlers of Preemption, she was born in that town on Oct 22, 1851. She was a pupil in the old Preemption school, probably the first one established in the township.

On July 3, 1871, she was married to James Y Johnston who past away at the home on Jan 19, 1928. One daughter, Mrs Millie Vance, died in 1919. The other daughter is the wife of James C Moffitt, now living at the Johnston home. Also surviving are the two sons, Harry A and Ralph, ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a sister, Miss Emma Johnston.

Mrs Johnston was a prominent member of St John's church and Idlewild Chapter, O E S. Possessed of a wide acquaintance thru the two counties, she was known as a devoted wife, an affectionate mother and a sympathetic friend.
