OBITUARY Thomas K Johnston

Thomas K Johnston was born in Ireland, June 13, 1823, and died at his home near Montezuma, Iowa, February 12, 1907; being 82 years, 5 months and 19 days old.

He was one of a family of nine children, 3 boys and 6 girls. The other sons went to New Australia about 45 years ago and have not been heard from for many years.

The sisters remained in the old country and two of them are still living, one being older and one younger than the deceased.

Mr Johnston came to America when about 40 years of age. He first came to Canada and then to the state of Illinois, thence to Iowa. He settled on the farm the first years he came to this country and there lived until he answered the call to go from earth.

He was married about three years after coming to Iowa and with his companion lived a quiet peaceful life until she died two years ago.

When he came to America he brought with him the 6 year old son of a sister, Mr Fred Johnston, who has cared for the old man since the death of his wife. He had no children of his own.

When a resident of Ireland Mr Johnston was a member of the Protestant Episcopal church, and when opportunity permitted he attended that church. For some years services were held in a school house in the neighborhood and he was one of the faithful ones.

The funeral services were held at the M E church on Thursday conducted by Rev Smith. The Masons were in charge of the services and the ritualistic burial service was used. "Uncle Tommy" will be greatly missed by every one.
