Event | OBITUARY March 9, 1939 (4 days after death)OBITUARIES THOMAS HUTCHINSON - Thomas Hutchinson passed away at his home in Milford township Sunday, March 5th, after a long period of failing health. Thomas Hutchinson was born in Rock Island county, Ill, June 17, 1867, and passed away at his home Sunday, March 5, 1939, at 6:45 p m at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 17 days. He was the son of Thomas and Susan Ramsey Hutchinson, both of whom were natives of north Ireland. They came to this country in 1846 in a sailing vessel, arriving in New Orleans, and later journeying up the Mississippi river to Rock Island, Ill where a home was established and where Mr Hutchinson grew to manhood. At the age of 26 years he came to Crawford county, Iowa, and purchased a farm in Milford township where he lived for 47 years. On March 5, 1894, he was united in marriage with Mrs Frances Petty Hutchinson. To this union were born five daughters and one son, namely: Mary Myrtle and Ida Anna, who passed away in infancy; Susan Faye Pieper, who departed this life at the age of 31 years; Frances Pearl (Mrs Jess Brown), and Mrs Loyal Luitjens and Alfred Hutchinson. After the passing of Mrs Pieper, Mr and Mrs Hutchinson took her three children into their home where they were loved and cared for as their own children. Mr Hutchinson was an extensive and successful stockman and farmer and contributed his share to the agricultural development of his community as a member of the Farm Bureau. He took great interest in politics and always gave his support to the republican party. He served several terms as township trustee, transacting its business as carefully as though it were his own. He was honest and upright in all his dealings and took a great interest in the affairs of the community, his motto being "Owe no man". He owned one of the first radios and had the privilege of hearing the first sermon broadcast over what was then known as WOAW by Rev R Brown of Omaha Gospel tabernacle; and whenever health permitted he continued to listen to the Sunday morning sermon. He was baptized in the Episcopal church in his infancy, but always gave his support to the different religious activities. He leaves to morn his passing his wife, a son, Alfred, two daughters, Mrs Jess Brown of Missouri Valley and Mrs Louie Luitjens of Denison; nine grand children; LaRoyce and Philip Pieper in the home, one grandson, Yale Pieper; Frances, Lois, Doria, Ardith and Beverly Brown of Missouri Valley and Norma Luitjens of Denison; two brothers, William and James; a sister, Mrs Anna Lang, all of Milan, Ill, besides many other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bartcher Funeral Home in Denison, Rev E E Zimmerman, pastor of the Vail Presbyterian church, in charge. He was assisted by Rev Mr Moir, of the Deloit Methodist church. There was a large attendance of long- time friends present at the services. The pallbearers were Marion Bowen, Ed Lamp, Harlow Mason, Horace Miller, Rodney North and Ralph Pieper. Music was furnished by the Bartcher choir. The Denison Bulletin, 9 March 1939 |
